Lyle/Pacelli Athletics baseball team knocks off Rushford-Peterson 5-3 Monday

The Lyle/Pacelli Athletics baseball team took to the road Monday for a non-conference matchup with the Rushford-Peterson Trojans, and five early runs, plus a combined one-hitter from the Athletics pitching staff proved to be the difference in a 5-3 win.

The Athletics tallied two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead, only to see the host Trojans tie the game with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.  Lyle/Pacelli retook the lead with three in the top of the second for a 5-2 lead, and the Athletics pitching staff and defense held the line from there, giving up only one more Trojan run in the bottom of the second on their way to the win.

Hard-throwing righty Hunter VaDeer went the first 3 and 1/3rds of an inning and gave up the three runs, two earned, on one hit, striking out seven and walking seven, and Isaac Nelsen then came in and earned the save, as he pitched the last 3 and 2/3rds of an inning and gave up no runs on no hits, fanning six and walking only one.

Nelsen helped his own cause on the mound offensively as he went 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, catcher Logyn Brooks was 1 for 4 with a run knocked in and a run scored, Hunter VaDeer was also 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, Jack Klingfus was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Landon Meyer went 1 for 2 with a run scored, and Dane Schara and Grady Meyer also added hits, with Meyer scoring a run in the win.

The Athletics are out to a 4-0 start on the season, and Lyle/Pacelli’s scheduled Southeast Conference matchup with Glenville-Emmons/Alden-Conger for today (Tuesday) has been postponed until May 10th due to the weather.  The Athletics will take to the road again for their next game, which will be played in Spring Grove Friday versus the Lions, with the Southeast Conference game set to start at 4:30 p.m.  that afternoon.
