Austin Packers softball team sweeps Rochester John Marshall in Monday doubleheader

The Austin Packers softball team traveled to Rochester Monday for a Big 9 Conference doubleheader with the John Marshall Rockets, and it was the Packers coming home with a doubleheader sweep by scores of 14-3 and 11-5.

In Game 1 of the doubleheader, Quinn Osgood was 2 for 4 with a home run, four RBI’s and four runs scored to help lead the Packers to the 14-3 win.  Austin scored three runs in the first inning and one in the third for an early 4-0 lead, and after the Rockets cut the deficit to a single run with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third, the Packers then took command by scoring four in the fourth, two more in the fifth and four additional runs in the top of the sixth to pull away for the victory.

Besides Osgood’s monster day offensively, Addison Walsh was 2 for 5  with an RBI, Kathryn Crouch went 2 for 4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored, and Jenna Hetzel was also 2 for 4 with a pair of runs knocked in.  Pitcher Kaydence Schaefer went the distance in the circle for the Packers for the win, as she gave up the three JM runs in seven innings of work, with two being earned, on three hits, six strikeouts and nine walks as Austin totaled 14 runs on 11 hits and committed one error, while John Marshall totaled three runs, three hits and seven errors.

In Game 2, Addison Walsh belted out three hits in four trips to the plate with a double and four RBI’s as the Packers rapped out 13 hits overall as a team in an 11-5 win.

Lauren Bowe was 2 for 3 in the game for Austin with an RBI and two runs scored, Morgan Cass was also 2 for 3 for the game with two runs scored, Addison Cline was 2 for 2 with a pair of RBI’s and three runs scored, Katelynn Klouse belted out a double in three trips to the plate with an RBI and a run scored, Alexis Brede was 1 for 4 with a pair of runs scored, and Quinn Osgood and Jenna Hetzel both also picked up hits in the win.

Kaydence Schaefer and Quinn Osgood combined to pick up the win in the circle Monday, as Schaefer went the first four innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits, striking out eight and walking six, while Osgood pitched one inning and gave up two runs, both earned, on one hit, striking out two and walking one.

With the sweep, the Packers are now 6-7 overall on the season, and the club returns to action today (Tuesday) as they head back out on the road to Winona to take on the Winhawks, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
