Southland Rebels baseball team knocks off GMLOK 5-2 Tuesday

The Southland Rebels baseball team was in search of win number six in a row Tuesday as they played host to the GMLOK Bulldogs in a Southeast Conference matchup, and it was Jonas Wiste belting a home run and knocking in four runs as the Rebels downed the Bulldogs 5-2.

The game was a scoreless duel between starting pitchers Tyson Stevens of Southland and Parker Johnson of GMLOK before the Rebels broke through with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead.  The Bulldogs were able to counter with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to cut the Rebels lead to 4-2, but they would get no closer as the Rebels answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth on their way to the victory.

Wiste wound up going 1 for 3 with the round tripper, four runs knocked in and another scored, Tyson Stevens helped his own cause on the mound by going 1 for 1 at the plate with three stolen bases and a run scored, and Austin Swenson picked up the other hit in the game for the Rebels in three plate appearances, plus he and Travis Kirtz also scored runs in the win.  For GMLOK, Sam Howard was 2 for 3, Blake Swenson went 1 for 2 with an RBI, and Connor Tangen and Parker Johnson both picked up hits as well.

Stevens went the distance on the mound for Southland and gave up the two Bulldog runs, with one earned, on five hits, striking out 11 and walking two to earn the win, while Parker Johnson took the loss on the mound for GMLOK as he gave up the five Southland runs, all earned, on three hits, striking out three and walking five.

With the win, Southland is now 11-1 on the season, and the Rebels return to action at the Adams Athletic Complex Thursday for a Southeast Conference doubleheader versus Mabel-Canton, with Game 1 scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.  With the loss, GMLOK is now 2-11 on the season, and the Bulldogs return to action Friday in a Southeast Conference doubleheader in Rochester versus Schaeffer Academy, with Game 1 set to start at 4:30 p.m. that afternoon.
