Austin Packers girls tennis team starts out 2023 season 1-2
The Austin Packers girls tennis team kicked off the 2023 fall sports season for Austin High School with a triangular at Waseca Thursday, and their home opener versus Fairmont Friday, and it was the Packers splitting their two matches in Waseca Thursday, and falling to the Cardinals at the Wescott Athletic Complex Tennis Courts Friday 5-2.
In their first match Thursday versus the host Bluejays, it was the Packers falling to a strong Waseca squad by the score of 6-1. Gracie Schmitt picked up the lone win for Austin at No. 1 singles as she downed Takya Schoenrock of the Bluejays in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The No. 3 doubles team of Payton Nelson and Claudia Slinden battled the team of Ashton Jenzen and Esme Pearce for three sets, as Nelson and Slinden took the first set for the Packers by the score of 6-3, but Jenzen and Pearce came back to take the next two sets 6-2 and 11-9.
In their second match versus Tri-City United/Cleveland Thursday, the Packers rolled to a 6-1 win, as Gracie Schmitt picked up her second win of the day at No. 1 singles as she blew past Ellie Adams of the Titans by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Seanna Kubas at No. 2 singles for the Packers downed Reagan Steffen of Tri-City United/Cleveland 6-1, 6-2, Jenna Hetzel at No. 3 singles swept Lily Martin of the Titans in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, and Sophia Meyer made it a clean sweep for the Packers in the singles matches as she downed Caleigh Hoefs of Tri-City/Cleveland 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
In the doubles competition, the No. 1 team of Abby and Katie VanPelt for Austin swept the team of Anne Cooper and Destynee Wolff for the Titans in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, and the No. 3 doubles team of Payton Nelson and Claudia Slinden defeated Adison Schroer and Avery Lerfald of Tri-City/Cleveland, 6-1, 6-4.
In their home opener Friday, the Packers were felled by visiting Fairmont by the score of 5-2, as Gracie Schmitt earned win No. 3 on the young season as she outdueled Hope Klanderud of Fairmont 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, and the No. 1 doubles team of Abby and Katie VanPelt downed Madisyn Peyman and Brynn Gustafson of the Cardinals in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 for Austin’s other win in the match. For the second time in two days, Austin’s No. 3 doubles team of Payton Nelson and Claudia Slinden battled for three sets but came up just short, as they dropped the first set to the Fairmont team of Clair Brockman and Carly Gustafson 6-4, rallied to take the second set 6-4, but fell in a tough third set by the score of 10-8.
The Packers are back into action next Tuesday, August 22nd as they travel to Rochester Mayo High School for a Big 9 Conference triangular with the host Spartans and Rochester John Marshall, with the action getting underway at 2:00 p.m.
