Austin Packers girls hockey edges Worthington 3-2 in OT Tuesday evening

The Austin Packers girls hockey team took to Interstate 90 Tuesday evening to travel to Worthington for a non-conference matchup with the Trojans out of the Big South Conference, and a goal from Brenna Haedt, her second of the game in overtime lifted the Packers to their first win of the young season by a score of 3-2.

Worthington’s Maren Peterson scored the only goal of the first period for a 1-0 Trojans lead, but it was Peyton Squire scoring unassisted at 2:50 of the second period to knot the game at 1 apiece, and 1:19 later, Haedt gave the Packers a 2-1 lead with a goal at 4:09, with assists to Squire and Camille Dunlap.  Worthington’s Addison Joens tied the game at 2 with the only goal of the third period at 7:09, but then in overtime, Haedt found the back of the net for Austin at 6:27, with another assist to Squire, her third point of the contest.

The Packers outshot the Trojans in the game 31-13, with Lily Haedt turning aside 11 of the 13 shots she faced for her first varsity win, while Macie Mahlberg made 28 saves in facing 31 shots to take the loss in net.  Austin was 0 for 4 on the power play for the game, while Worthington was 0 for 2.

The Packers are now 1-5 overall on the season with the win, and Austin will be back on the ice in Northfield versus the Raiders in the Big 9 Conference Thursday evening, with face-off at 7:15 p.m.
