Agwa goes over 1,000 points, Austin Packers girls basketball team downs Mankato West 66-47

In a game you heard on AM 1480 KAUS Tuesday evening, the Austin Packers girls basketball team played host to the Mankato West Scarlets in a Big 9 Conference matchup, and Ove Berven Gym was abuzz with anticipation concerning junior guard Ajiem Agwa needing 14 points to reach 1,000 for her career.  Agwa reached that mark in the second half to become the 11th Packer to reach 1,000 points in the program’s history, and she wound up with 26 points overall to help lead the Packers to a 66-47 win.

Austin trailed 12-6 early in the first half, but they then went on a 13-0 run to take their biggest lead of the half at 19-12.  The Scarlets used five 3-point field goals in the half to battle their way back to a 29-28 lead late in the half, but the Packers were able work their way back in front 33-31 at the halftime break.  Austin then took control of the game at the start of the second half by going on an 11-1 run to push their lead to 12 at 44-32, and in the meantime, Agwa steadily worked her way towards the 14 points she needed to reach 1,000, as she had tallied 12 points on the night when she got possession of the ball…

The Scarlets were able to cut the lead to eight at one time at 46-38, but the Packers responded with an 11-3 run to push their lead to 16 at 57-41, and their lead never dropped below 15 points the rest of the way.

Besides Agwa’s game-high 26 points, guard Quinn Osgood drained four 3-pointers on her way to 14 points, guard Marissa Shute was also in double figures with 11 points, Addison Walsh scored all six of her points in the second half, Atee Obang scored five points off the Packer bench, and Gracie Arndt swished a pair of free throws in the second half for two points in the win.

The Packers are now 9-10 in the Big 9 Conference with the win, and 10-12 overall on the season, and Austin will play their final regular-season road game Friday night in Red Wing versus the Wingers, with tip-off at 7:30 p.m.  The Packers will then finish out the regular season with home games versus Northfield Tuesday, February 20th, and versus Winona Thursday, February 22nd.
