Austin Packers girls tennis team upends Winona 4-3 Tuesday

The Austin Packers girls tennis team was looking to get back on the winning track in a match versus Big 9 Conference rival Winona at the Wescott Athletic Complex tennis courts Tuesday, and it was the Packers edging the Winhawks by the score of 4-3.

Austin earned a pair of wins in singles, as Gracie Schmitt was able to rally from 0-3 down in the second set to defeat Anna Bricco of Winona at No. 1 singles 7-6 (5), 7-5, and Jenna Hetzel downed Melaine Buttenhoff of the Winhawks in straight sets at No. 3 singles by scores of 6-1, 6-2.  In doubles, Austin’s No. 1 team of Abby and Katy VanPelt defeated Bella Reeck and Aundra Aarre of Winona in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, and at No. 3 doubles, the Austin duo of Payton Nelson and Claudia Slinden downed Haylee Steinfeildt and Ana Schultz of the Winhawks by the score of 6-1, 6-4.

With the win, the Packers are now 2-6 overall on the season and 1-4 in the Big 9 Conference.  Austin returns to action Thursday in Mankato versus the West Scarlets, with the action scheduled to start at 4:45 p.m.
