Austin Packers football team falls to Byron 61-7 Friday night

In a game you heard on AM 1480 KAUS, the Austin Packers football team played host to the Byron Bears, the No. 4 team in the state in the latest Class AAAA poll on a cloudy, hazy and rainy Friday night at Art Hass Stadium, and Bears senior quarterback Kale Robinson ran for three touchdowns and threw for three more as the Bears led 47-7 at the half on their way to a 61-7 win.

The lone score for the Packers was a 5-yard touchdown run from junior running back Garlo Gee in the second quarter to cap off a 10-play, 75 yard touchdown march to cut the Bears lead at that point to 33-7.  Byron scored 21 points off of four Austin turnovers, and they have now forced 18 in four games this season.  Austin’s Isaac Osgood came up with a pair of interceptions for the Austin defense, and junior linebacker Sam Winkels recovered an onsides kick after Gee’s touchdown run at the Byron 49-yard line, but the Packers then lost senior quarterback Dakota Retterath to a right arm injury when he was sacked and fumbled on the first play of the ensuing drive.  The Bears then scored on the very next play when Robinson threw his second touchdown pass of the game to wide receiver Carson Heimer, who took a hitch pass to the left, sprinted down the sideline and scored on a 43-yard touchdown pass to make the score 40-7 at that time.

With the loss, Austin is now 1-3 on the season, and the Packers are on the road for their next game in Week 5 as they travel to Faribault to take on the Falcons, with the kickoff at 7 p.m.  You’ll hear the game on AM 1480 KAUS, with the pre-game show on the air at 6:30 p.m. that evening.
