UPDATE:  Two suspects in custody in connection with drive-by shooting incident in northwest Austin Friday evening

Two suspects who were being sought by authorities in connection with a drive-by shooting incident in northwest Austin late Friday evening in which one man was killed, and at least two other people were injured have both been taken into custody.

Local law enforcement responded to a 911 call at approximately 10:40 p.m. Friday evening concerning a vehicle that had crashed into an unoccupied residence at 701 4th Street North in Austin.  Captain Todd Clennon with the Austin Police Department stated in a news release that a deceased male and two injured passengers were inside the vehicle.

Upon further investigation, Captain Clennon stated that officers learned that immediately prior to the crash, five people had entered the vehicle on the 700 block of 2nd Street Northwest when a 2015 Dodge Durango approached their vehicle and a person inside began firing. The victim’s vehicle then began to roll, eventually crashing into the residence on 4th Street North.

Clennon stated that the driver of the victim vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, and he was taken to the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy and formal identification.  Captain Clennon stated that his name will be released once family notifications have taken place.

Two other people who remained in the victim’s vehicle sustained gunshot wounds. Both were taken by ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Austin, where the female victim was then transferred by air ambulance to Mayo Clinic/St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester; and the male victim was taken by ambulance to the same facility. Both remain hospitalized in serious but stable condition at last word.

Captain Clennon indicated that two additional passengers in the victim’s vehicle fled the scene. Investigators are concerned that they may also have been injured and are trying to locate them as well.  Authorities believe that the shooting was a targeted incident.  The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension stated in a news release that no information has been developed at this time to indicate there may be an ongoing threat to the public, but they added that this remains an ongoing investigation.

Both suspects who were allegedly involved in the shooting were taken into custody Saturday.  One suspect, 28-year old Cham Obang Oman of Austin, who was believed to have been driving the suspect vehicle was booked into the Mower County jail Saturday afternoon on felony charges of 2nd degree murder, with intent, not premeditated, three felony counts of 2nd degree drive-by shooting, and Oman is also being held on a felony charge of dangerous weapons, drive-by shooting towards a person.  23-year old Manamany Omot Abella of Austin, who was believed to have been a passenger in the suspect vehicle was booked into the Mower County jail late Saturday evening on a felony charge of 2nd degree murder with intent, not premeditated, and also on a felony charge of being a felon convicted of a crime of violence, firearm violation.  The Minnesota BCA stated in a news release that the suspect vehicle, the white 2015 Dodge Durango with license plate JAG-300 is still missing, and is being sought by authorities.

 The Austin Police Department is being assisted with its investigation by Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents and crime scene personnel and the Minnesota Department of Corrections.  Captain Clennon stated that additional information will be released as the investigation progresses.
