One of three suspects in June 9th, 2023 drive-by shooting in northwest Austin pleads guilty in Mower County District Court

One of three suspects accused of being involved in a June 9th, 2023 drive-by shooting in northwest Austin that killed an Austin man and wounded two others is pleading guilty in Mower County District Court.  

28-year old Cham Obang Oman, 23-year old Manamany Omot Abella and 19-year old Jenup Stepen Chop, all of Austin are all facing amended felony charges of 2nd degree murder, with intent, not premeditated, 2nd degree murder, drive-by shooting, two counts each of 2nd degree attempted murder, drive-by shooting, and dangerous weapons, drive-by shooting toward a person.  Court documents in the case stated that a vehicle containing Oman, Abella and Chop allegedly pulled up next to a vehicle containing the three victims late on the evening of June 9th, and one or more of the suspects then allegedly fired shots at the victims, killing 25-year old Gumdel Nygare Gilo of Austin, and wounding two others.

At a hearing Monday, Abella pleaded guilty to an amended felony charge of aiding an offender, accomplice after the fact, and sentencing for Abella in Mower County District Court has been scheduled for August 2nd.  Oman and Chop have pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against them, and a motion hearing for Chop in Mower County District Court has been scheduled for June 18th, followed by a pretrial hearing on June 28th, and a jury trial for Chop has been scheduled to be held from July 8th through the 19th.

Bail with conditions for Oman was set at $500,000, and at $1 million with no conditions, while bail with conditions for both Abella and Chop has been set at $750,000, and at $1 million with no conditions.
