LeRoy/Ostrander Cardinals football team stages 31-point 4th quarter to defeat Houston 59-50 Friday evening

It was a comeback for the ages for the LeRoy/Ostrander Cardinals football team in Houston versus the Hurricanes Friday evening.

The Cardinals, who came into the game unbeaten at 2-0 and receiving votes for state ranking in Class 9-Man trailed the 3-0 and No. 10 ranked Hurricanes 28-14 at one point, and 50-28 heading into the fourth quarter before erupting for 31 unasnwered points to shock the Hurricanes by a score of 59-50.

Reigning Overby Orthodontics Prep Athlete of the Week Camden Hungerholt, the junior quarterback for the Cardinals who was responsible for eight touchdowns, three rushing and five passing in a Week 2 rout of Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons was at it again Friday night as he carried the ball 32 times for 375 yards and eight touchdowns, plus he was 14 of 24 passing for 193 yards to account for 568 of the team’s 580 total yards of offense in the game.  Receiving-wise for the Cardinals, Carter Sweeney hauled in nine passes for 91 yards, Reid Hungerholt snagged three passes for 47 yards, Logan Diemer caught one pass for 37 yards, and Ryder Stern had one catch for 18 yards.  The Cardinals defense also posted five sacks and forced three turnovers, one interception and two fumble recoveries to aid in the huge comeback win.

The 3-0 Cardinals will play host to 3-1 Southland Friday night, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.  The Rebels have won two in a row, their latest win a 29-26 victory in Adams versus Mabel-Canton last Friday night.
