Junior midfielder Kennedy Josephs, the leading scorer for the Rochester Mayo Spartans girls’ soccer team notched two more goals Thursday evening, and sophomore forward Isabel Wright added another goal for the Spartans, who downed the Austin Packers 3-0 at Art Hass Stadium.

Josephs started the scoring in the 12th minute when she blasted a shot straight away from 20 yards out that hit the bottom of the crossbar and deflected down to the turf just over the goal line for a 1-0 Spartan lead.  Wright made it 2-0 in the 36th minute, and she added an assist on the third Spartan goal as her free kick in the 59th minute straight away from 28 yards was stopped initially by Austin goalkeeper Sara Wangen, who was making her first varsity start in goal.  The ball came loose after Wangen’s leaping save and Josephs was there to tap the ball into the net for a 3-0 Mayo lead.

Wangen made 11 saves overall in her varsity debut, including several superlative stops in the second half in an effort to keep the Packers in the game.  Mayo, though, was suffocating on defense the entire evening as they kept everything away from keeper Morgan Sawyer, who notched her second straight win in goal.

Austin is now 1-2 on the season, and they are back in action on Saturday afternoon in Owatonna, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
