Austin Packers girls hockey blanks Fairmont 2-0

The Austin Packers girls hockey team was looking for their second win in a row at Riverside Arena Monday evening versus the Fairmont Cardinals in a non-conference tilt, and Sara Wangen and Kate Holtz scored, while goaltender Kyia Radford-Garcia turned away 27 shots in a 2-0 shutout win.

After a scoreless first period, Wangen scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 12:54 of the second period, with an assist to A.J. Barrera.  Holtz  added an insurance goal at 7:15 of the third period, with an assist to Allie Davidson, and the Packers defense and Garcia did the rest on the way to the win.

The Packers outshot the Cardinals 37-27 in the game, with Fairmont netminder Rachel O’Connor making 35 saves in taking the loss between the pipes, while Garcia earned her third shutout of the season in making the 27 saves to keep the Cardinals off the scoresheet.

With the win, Austin raises their record to 12-10, and only two games remain in the regular season before the start of the Section 1A playoffs, a road game at Red Wing Thursday evening at 7:15 p.m., followed by their final regular-season home game Monday, February 7th versus Winona-Cotter at 7:00 p.m.
