Austin Packers baseball falls to Rochester Mayo in Big 9 Conference action 4-2 Tuesday
The Austin Packers baseball team was looking to get on the winning track at Dick Seltz Field Tuesday in a Big 9 Conference matchup with Rochester Mayo, and despite Packers starting pitcher Nick Robertson striking out eight and walking only one in a solid start, Mayo’s Ian Regal struck out ten and did not give up a hit in 6 1/3rd innings as the Spartans scored three unearned runs in a 4-2 win.
Mayo used six hits and six Austin errors to score a single run in the top of the fourth and three in the seventh for a 4-0 lead, but the Packers rallied in the bottom half of the inning with their only hit of the game, a two-RBI double from Bayden Bishop to cut the lead to 4-2. Mayo’s Alexander Sadow, who came into the game for Regal with one out in the seventh was able to hold the Packers at bay after Bishop’s double to close out the win for the Spartans.
Robertson was strong on the mound for Austin Tuesday as the lefty went 6 1/3rds of a inning and gave up the four Mayo runs, one earned, on five hits, striking out eight and walking one. Sam Oelfke came on with one out in the top of the seventh and gave up no runs on one hit, and he did not strike out or walk a batter.
With the loss, the Packers are out to an 0-3 start, and they return to action at home Thursday versus Mankato West, with first pitch from Dick Seltz Field at 5 p.m. You’ll hear the game on AM 1480 KAUS, with the pre-game show getting underway at 4:50 p.m.
