Albert Lea man charged with attempted murder, assault with a dangerous weapon in connection to Sunday shooting
Charges have been filed against an Albert Lea man in Freeborn County District Court in connection with a shooting on Sunday that injured three people, including a police officer.
According to a criminal complaint in the case, 21-year-old Devin Weiland has been charged with three counts of attempted murder in the 1st degree and three counts of 2nd degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
The incident started at approximately 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning when an Albert Lea Police officer responded to a report of fireworks or gunshots at the Shady Oaks Apartment Complex. When the officer arrived, investigators stated that he was ambushed.
According to the criminal complaint, the officer was wearing a protective vest when he was shot in the chest.
The complaint went on to state that Weiland fired shots over the next eight hours as officers attempted to make contact with him. Three separate SWAT Teams were called to the scene, and two men, ages 52 and 38 who live in or near the building were injured by gunfire during the incident.
Weiland eventually surrendered while he bled heavily from a forehead injury. After medical treatment at Mayo Clinic/St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Weiland was taken to the Freeborn County Adult Detention Center where he admitted to firing approximately 75 rounds during the incident.
Firearms seized from Weiland’s apartment included three rifles and a shotgun.
