11-goal second period lifts Albert Lea past Austin in Big 9 boys’ hockey Saturday afternoon 15-0

It was a wild one at Riverside Arena Saturday afternoon.

The Austin Packers played host to Albert Lea in a Big 9 Conference boys’ hockey tilt Saturday afternoon, and in a game that featured 51 combined penalty minutes, 34 for Austin and 17 for Albert Lea, three players for each team receiving five minute roughing majors and game misconducts in a first period rhubarb immediately after an Albert Lea player was injured after being put into the boards at center ice, and the Head Coach for Albert Lea ejected from the game after a tirade directed at the Austin bench in the second period after a Packer was called for a five minute boarding major and a game misconduct, the Tigers rolled up eleven goals in the second period on their way to a 15-0 win.

Blake Ulve tallied a goal and six assists for Albert Lea in the second period alone, Tim Chalmers scored four goals and added two assists, and Max Edwin added three goals for a hat trick in the game for Albert Lea.  Austin netminder Ethan Knox made 32 saves in facing 47 shots for the game, while Tiger goaltender Braden Fjelsta turned aside all nine shots he faced in the game for the win in net.  Austin did not have a power play opprotunity in the game while Albert Lea, who came into the game with a power play unit converting at a 43% clip, went 4 for 6 in the win.

With the loss, Austin is now 0-12 in the Big 9 Conference and 0-13 overall.  The Packers are back on the ice Tuesday evening in LaCrescent versus the Lancers, with face-off at 7:00 p.m.
