Twelve people injured in seven-vehicle accident on I-35 in Rice County Sunday evening

Twelve people were injured following a seven-vehicle accident on Interstate-35  in Rice County Sunday evening.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported that six vehicles were stopped in the southbound lane of I-35 at 7:52 p.m. Sunday evening near milepost 73 in a construction zone when they were struck from behind by a semi, which caused all of the vehicles to collide with one another.

The driver of the semi, 52-year old Murray D Wood, 58, of Manitoba, was uninjured, but 26-year old Brenda Martha Nieto Reyes, 2-year old Milayah Dorantes Nieto, 10-year old Ivan Zepeda, 4-year old Jesus Carbajal Zepeda, 21-year old Marco J Dorantes, 12-year old Yeimee Dorantes and 39-year old Leticia Nieto, all of Faribault all suffered non-life threatening injuries. 37-year old Ibrahim Mohamed Ahmed of Apple Valley, 51-year old Zamzam Ibrahim Ahmed of Faribault, 28-year old Mark Thomas Nelson of Laramie, Wyoming, 33-year old Dwain Thomas Wiener of Le Center and 15-year old Makenna Jo Belling of Erie, North Dakota all also suffered non-life threatening injuries in the incident.

The only other party involved in the accident that was uninjured besides Wood was 20-year old Ashlikay Maria Castillo of Owatonna, who was driving a 2014 Chevy Impala at the time of the accident. The State Patrol reported that all parties involved in the accident were wearing their seatbelts, and the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Departments from Northfield and New Market, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and New Market Police all assisted the State Patrol at the accident scene Sunday evening.
