Minnesota DNR says now is the ideal time to prune trees

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has reported that now is the ideal time to prune trees, especially oaks.

Experts say an open wound on trees during the summer can attract insects that spread diseases like oak wilt. That risk is minimized during the winter, according to D-N-R cooperative forestry outreach specialist Jennifer Teegarden….

Other tree pruning tips include trimming branches before they grow to more than 2 inches in diameter, keeping the branch collar by not cutting flush with the trunk, and using the three-cut method for large branches.
