A suspect in an early Saturday morning shooting in downtown Austin that sent two men to the hospital is facing four felony charges in Mower County District Court.
Officers from the Austin Police Department responded to a reported assault in the Plaza Parking Lot in downtown Austin at approximately 12:37 a.m. Saturday morning. Officers located a male victim there who appeared to have been shot in the shoulder and leg. The victim was treated by the officers, along with the Austin Fire Department, before being turned over to Mayo Clinic Ambulance. Chief of Police Dave McKichan stated in a report that a second victim, who had suffered a non-life-threatening leg wound, would later be located seeking treatment at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Austin.
Officers did identify a suspect, who was located in a residence in the 200 block of 7th St. NW at 3:35 a.m. Saturday morning. Chief McKichan stated that 29-year old Hector Ubaldo Serrano Maldonado, of Austin, was taken into custody without incident. Detectives later recovered a firearm believed to have been used during the incident.
In his first appearance in Mower County District Court Monday, Maldonado was charged with felonies for 2nd degree attempted murder, with intent, not premeditated, 1st degree assault, 2nd degree assault with a dangerous weapon, substantial bodily harm, and also for 2nd degree assault with a dangerous weapon. Judge Jeffery Kritzer set bail for Maldonado at $100,000 with conditions, and $250,000 with no conditions.
Maldonado’s next appearance in Mower County District Court will be a Rule 8 hearing on July 13th.
