Austin Packers boys hockey team falls to LaCrescent-Hokah 8-1 at Rochester Kiwanis Hockey Festival

The Austin Packers boys hockey team was in action on Day 2 of the Rochester Kiwanis Hockey Festival versus Section 1A rival LaCrescent-Hokah at Graham Arena Thursday, and after falling to Windom 4-0 in Day 1 action Wednesday, the Packers were felled by the Lancers by a score of 8-1.

The Lancers held a 5-0 lead when Elijah Krueger scored Austin’s lone goal of the game on the power play at 14:30 of the second period, with an assist to Gavin Brekke.  The Lancers outshot the Packers 35-12 for the game, and junior netminder Daran Plunkett turned away 27 of the 35 shots he faced, while LaCrescent-Hokah goalie Charlie Wieser made 11 saves to earn the win in net.  Austin was penalized five times for 10 minutes, while the Lancers were whistled for two penalties for four minutes, and LaCrescent-Hokah was 2 for 5 on the power play, while the Packers were 1 for 2.

The Packers are now 3-7 overall on the season, and it gets no easier for Austin for Day 3 of the tournament, as they will tangle with the Luverne Cardinals, the No. 15 team in the state in the latest Class A rankings, with puck drop scheduled for 3:30 p.m. this (Friday) afternoon.
