The Austin Packers boys hockey team traveled to Bud King Ice Arena in Winona Thursday night to take on the Winhawks in a Big 9 Conference tilt, and it was junior forward Teis Larson compiling two goals and two assists to help lead the Winhawks to a 6-3 win on their home ice.
Winona led 2-0 at the end of one period of play when senior forward Cade Morrsion tallied his first goal of the season for the Packers at 4:11 of the second period to make the score 2-1, with assists to Sam Eyre and Isaac Stromlund, but with Austin on the power play after the the Winhawks were whistled for a too many men on the ice penalty at 13:15, Wesylee Kohner scored a short-handed goal at 14:23 to reestablish a two-goal lead for Winona at the end of two periods of play.
Larsen then scored an even-strength goal at 11:52 of the third period, followed by a power-play tally at 13:04 to open up a 5-1 lead for the Winhawks, but sophomore forward Isaiah Hemann scored his first goal of the season for the Packers :19 seconds later at 13:23, with an assist to Isaac Swenson to cut the lead to 5-2. Maxwell Dalenberg notched another power-play goal for Winona at 15:05 of the period to make the score 6-2, and Grady Carney added an unassisted power-play goal for Austin 1:32 later at 16:37 to account for the 6-3 final.
Daran Plunkett got the start between the pipes for Austin and gave up two goals in facing five shots, and senior Ethan Knox then came in to go the rest of the way for the Packers as he wound up facing 43 shots and making 39 saves. Damon Nolan faced 36 shots and made 33 saves for Winona to earn the win in net. Each team scored on the power play as Austin was 1 for 6, while Winona was 2 for 5.
With the loss, the Packers are now 1-8 overall on the season, and 1-4 in the Big 9 Conference, and Austin returns to action Saturday at home versus Faribault, with face-off at Riverside Arena at noon.
