Three people were taken to Mayo Clinic Health Systems of Austin after a residence in the 2000 block of 3rd Avenue Northeast was destroyed by a fire late Friday evening.

The Austin Fire Department responded to a call concerning the fire at approximately 11:10 p.m. Friday evening and Austin Fire Chief Jim McCoy reported that when firefighters arrived on the scene, they estimated that 80 percent of the house was enveloped in flames.  Chief McCoy went on to report that three of the four people that live at the house who were home at the time of the fire were being treated for injuries.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but the State Fire Marshal’s office was on scene Saturday morning to assist with the investigation.  McCoy stated that a cause will not be determined until authorities are able to speak with people from the home.

The home is being considered a total loss and an adjoining garage was also damaged in the fire.

The Brownsdale Fire Department was called in for mutual aid in the form of manpower.  Chief McCoy stated that firefighters were on the scene for approximately two hours after the fire was extinguished to ensure it was completely out.
