Suspect in early Sunday morning shooting in Albert Lea hospitalized

Authorities reported that the suspect in a shooting Sunday that injured three men, including an Albert Lea Police officer, was hospitalized at the Mayo Clinic.  

The Albert Lea Police Department reported that 21-year old Devin Matthew Weiland, of Albert Lea, is currently in custody and was in surgery Sunday for his injuries.  

Weiland is the suspect in the case where a police officer was ambushed early Sunday after responding to a complaint. The officer, who was shot in the chest, was treated and released for his injuries.

Two other men, ages 52 and 38, were also injured, with the 52-year old male being transported to Mayo Clinic/St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. The condition of the two men was not known at last word. 

J.D. Carlson, Director of Public Safety for the Albert Lea Police Department stated that the Freeborn County Attorney’s Office will review the case to determine charges.

The apartment complex where the shooting took place was evacuated during the standoff. As of last word, police indicated that all the residents, with the exception of the third floor, had been allowed to return.
