Rochester Century backup quarterback Brock Shamblin threw three second quarter touchdown passes and the Panthers also used stout defense and fantastic field position to tally four TD’s overall in the quarter to defeat the Austin Packers 42-13 on Century’s homecoming.

The Packers were forced into a three-and-out to start the game, and Century took over after an Austin punt at the Packer 48.  A run by sophomore Zach Herber and a 15-yard facemask penalty on the run quickly moved the ball to the Austin 17.  On the second play of the drive, Herber swept around right end and down the sideline 17 yards for a Panther touchdown to put Century ahead 7-0 after the extra point.

After both teams punted twice, the Packer defense put Century deep in their own territory with two of their six sacks on the night and forced a punt from the end zone that was ran back by Agwa Nywesh to the Panther 35.  The Century defense, though, again stepped to the fore and forced a turnover on downs after four plays.

The Panthers were forced to punt on the ensuing possession, but punter Jack Fisher pinned the Packers at their own 3-yard line as his punt was downed by Derek Shamblin to put Austin in the shadow of its own goalpost.  The Packers went three-and-out and Samuel Misoi was forced to punt out of the end zone and Century took over at the Packer 25.  Seven plays later, quaterback Nathan Eberhart took the ball in from 2 yards out and the extra point put Century ahead 14-0.

Things didn’t get any better for Austin on their next drive which started at their own 6-yard line after a misplayed kickoff.  A pass on third down was tipped and Shamblin made a diving interception at the Austin 15-yard line, which set up a 7-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Brock Shamblin to Fisher to put Century ahead 21-0 after the extra point.

Austin was forced to punt again on their next possession, and the Panthers took over at their 49.  On the first play, Shamblin threw long down the right sideline and a leaping Fisher took in the pass and went the rest of the way for a 51-yard touchdown and a 28-0 lead.

Another misplayed kickoff put Austin back to their own 10-yard line, and on the first play cornerback Mark Leonard came knifing through the line of scrimmage untouched and on first down, he separated the Austin running back from the football and Century was in business again at the Packer 7.  Three plays later, Shamblin this time hit Zac Mann with a 3-yard TD pass and a 35-0 lead at the half.

The Packers got on the board at the start of the second half when the defense forced a punt and, for the third week in a row, the Packers blocked a punt as Mason O’Connor came barging in for the block, plus the scoop and score from 12 yards out to make the score 35-7.

On their next possession, Century had the ball for nine plays, but a fumble was recovered by the Packers at their 26.  As they did all night long, the Panther defense forced a punt three plays later, and Misoi could not field a low snap to give Century the ball at the Packer 15.  On the first play, Nathan Eberhart threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Johnson to put the Panthers ahead 42-7.  A 2-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback Teyghan Hovland provided the last touchdown of the game to make the final 42-13.

Hovland led the Packers in rushing with 8 carries as both a quarterback and running back for 29 yards and the touchdown, while Eli Johnson passing in the game was 4 for 22 for 78 yards and an interception as Century turned three Packers turnovers into 14 points.  Collin Dahlback was the top receiver for Austin with 3 catches for 59 yards.

The Packers fall to 2-2 on the season, and they will play host to Winona for their annual Homecoming game next Friday night at Art Hass Stadium.  AM 1480 KAUS will have all the action with the pre-game starting at 6:30 p.m., and kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
