One person injured in two-vehicle accident on I-35 in Freeborn County Saturday evening

One person was injured in a two-vehicle accident on southbound Interstate 35 in Freeborn County late Saturday evening.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported that a 2004 Freightliner straight truck pulling another straight truck and being driven by 67-year old Jose Francisco Trejo Cartagena of El Salvador, and a 2011 Volvo semi being driven by 63-year old Thomas Edward Voigt of Des Moines, Iowa were both southbound on Interstate 35 at approximately 10:31 p.m. Saturday evening when they collided, and both vehicles came to rest in the ditch near milepost 11 in Albert Lea Township.

Cartagena suffered non-life threatening injuries in the accident, and he was transported to Mayo Clinic/St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester for treatment, while Voigt was uninjured.  The State Patrol indicated that it was unknown if Cartagena was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident,  while Voigt was wearing his.  

The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, the Albert Lea Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance all assisted the State Patrol at the accident scene Saturday evening.
