Mapleview man taken into custody after a two-vehicle, head-on type accident on Hormel Century Parkway

A Mapleview man was taken to the Mower County jail after a two-vehicle, head-on type accident on Hormel Century Parkway in front of the QPP employee gate late Monday evening.

Austin Police reported that a 2004 Honda CRV being driven by a 17-year old female from Austin collided head-on with a 2014 Chevy Silverado being driven by 23-year old Marcos Rodriguez of Mapleview in the eastbound lane of the Hormel Century Parkway adjacent to the skate park just past 10:00 p.m. Monday evening. Rodriquez, who told officers that he caused the accident by drifting into the lane while looking at his phone, was later taken into custody after providing a preliminary breath test of over .08 and failing two of three field sobriety tests.

Rodriguez, who declined medical treatment for a minor thumb injury at the scene of the accident was taken into custody on charges of criminal vehicular operation, bodily harm, driving with no insurance and operating a cellphone while driving. The 17-year old female was evaluated at the scene by Mayo Clinic Ambulance personnel for a cut lip, a sore shoulder and a sore hip.  Rodriguez was later booked into the Mower County jail and released after an officer executed a criminal vehicular operation blood draw search warrant.

Austin Police Captain Todd Clennon reported that the case has been forwarded to the Mower County Attorney’s Office for review.
