Lyle/Pacelli Athletics baseball teams claims Southeast Conference title with 15-1, 5-inning win over GMLOK
The Lyle/Pacelli Athletics baseball team was looking to clinch the Southeast Conference title at Marcusen Park Monday in the continuance of a conference matchup with GMLOK from last Thursday, and it was the Athletics utilizing strong pitching from Mac Nelson, error-free defense and six runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 15-1, 5-inning win to clinch the conference crown.
Lyle/Pacelli trailed 1-0 after a half-inning last Thursday before coming back with four in their half of the first and five more runs in the second to take a 9-1 lead before the game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth because of rain and lightning. When the game restarted Monday, the Athletics quickly put the game even further out of reach by scoring six runs to eventually win by the 10-run rule.
Hunter VaDeer helped to lead the way offensively for LP by going 2 for 3 with three runs knocked in and three more scored, Jake Truckenmiller was 2 for 4 out of cleanup spot in the batting order with a double, a RBI and two runs scored, Mac Nelson went 1 for 3 with a RBI and two runs scored, Blake Klingfus went 1 for 2 with a triple, three RBI’s and two runs scored, Jack Klingfus went 2 for 3 out of the No. 9 spot in the order for the Athletics with a double, two RBI’s and two runs scored and Isaac Nelson was 1 for 1 with two runs scored. For GMLOK, Dusty Copley had two of the Bulldog’s four hits in the game, including a triple and a run scored and Connor Munson and Cole Kruegel chipped in the other hits in the loss.
Mac Nelson was strong on the mound for Lyle/Pacelli as he gave up the one run, which was earned, on four hits, striking out eight and walking one in five innings of work to earn the win.
With the win, Lyle/Pacelli clinches the Southeast Conference title with a record of 12-2, and they finish the regular season with an overall record of 14-4. The Athletics will carry a seven-game winning streak and the No. 2 seed into the Section 1A playoffs starting on Wednesday at Marcusen Park versus the No. 15 seeded Schaeffer Academy Lions.
