Lyle/Pacelli Athletics baseball team blanks Sprive Grove 7-0 Friday

The Lyle/Pacelli Athletics baseball team was looking to keep their record unblemished in Spring Grove versus the Lions Friday afternoon as the two teams met in Southeast Conference play for the second time in a week, and as he did last Monday, righthanded pitcher Isaac Nelsen held the Lions bats in check as he fired a complete game one-hit shutout in a 7-0 Athletics win.

Friday’s pitching matchup was the same as the one at Marcusen Park last Monday as Nelsen’s mound opponent for Spring Grove was right hander Caleb Griffin, who again held the Athletics offense in check until the top of the fourth inning when LP pushed across a run for a 1-0 lead, and the floodgates then opened in the top of the fifth when the Athletics tallied six runs to chase Griffin from the game, as he wound up going 5 and 2/3rds of an inning and gave up four runs, all earned, on five hits, striking out eight and walking one.  Ben Udstuen went the rest of the way for the Lions and gave up three runs, all earned, on two hits, striking out one and walking two.  Nelsen was stellar on the mound for Lyle/Pacelli as he gave up just the one hit in the shutout, striking out 11 and walking one.

Offensively for the Athletics, Jake Truckenmiller led the way by going 2 for 4 with two RBI’s and a run scored, Dane Schara was 1 for 3 with a double and two runs scored, Nelsen helped his own cause by going 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, and Jack Klingfus and Logyn Brooks were both 1 for 4 in the win.

The game Friday finished a stretch of four games in five days for the Athletics who are still unbeaten on the season at 9-0, and Lyle/Pacelli will be back in action in Truman Monday versus Granada-Huntley/East Chain/Truman, with first pitch in the non-conference game at 4:30 p.m.
