The Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office received a report late Thursday morning of possible human remains being located in a remote area in or near Forestville State Park.

A collaborative investigation by the Mower County and Fillmore County Sheriff’s Offices is ongoing, as Mower County Sheriff Steve Sandvik reported that private parties had located the remains, which were largely skelatized and unidentifiable just before noon on Thursday.  The remains were removed and transported to the Southeast Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death and identification. Sandvik went on to state that his office is working closely with the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office on the case, as there is a possibility the remains could be those of 35-year old Steven Holm of LeRoy.  Holm was reported missing on August 7th. A vehicle registered to Holm was found on or about August 2nd at the Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park. Sandvik stated that law enforcement is not rushing to any conclusions about the remains possibly being those of Holm.

Sheriff Sandvik went on to report that authorities are waiting on the medical examiner’s office for a positive identification of the remains, and he added that there were no outward indications of any foul play at the scene.
