Hormel Foods to team up with Austin Schools to honor seniors during COVID-19 pandemic
Hormel Foods of Austin is teaming up with Austin Schools concerning different methods of recognizing this year’s seniors, who have had their final year in school, plus graduation ceremonies and celebrations turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic. Saville Lord, Manager of the SPAM Museum spoke with KAUS about some of the events being planned, including banners at Wescott Field, the Red and Green Project and Senior to Senior letters…
Lord went on to state that the 340 banners will be hung on the fencing surrounding the Wescott Athletic Complex. Austin Schools stated in a letter to parents that a virtual graduation ceremony will be held due to the COVID-19 pandemic where the individual components will be recorded, including student speeches and recognition of the graduates by the school board.
The ceremony will also include the video of the seniors that normally plays at the start of each graduation along with the names being read off with their picture. That video, when edited together, will be available for students and families to watch the day of graduation on June 5th. From 6-8 p.m., the plan will allow students and families to participate in a drive-thru method of collecting their diploma, similar to how they picked up caps and gowns earlier this month.
