GMLOS wrestling team headed to State Class A team wrestling tournament after 43-30 win over Dover/Eyota

After a pin by No. 1 seeded GMLOS’s Cameron Sneed at 195 pounds clinched a 36-35 win over No. 4 seeded Chatfield Friday night in the Section 1A team wrestling semi-finals at the Mayo Civic Center, the Bulldogs were back in action in Rochester Saturday against No. 3 seeded Dover/Eyota for the right to travel to the State Class A team wrestling tournament.  After three straight pins for the Eagles at 126, 132 and 138 gave them an 18-15 lead, it was all GMLOS from there on in as the Bulldogs responded with six straight wins, which featured three pins, a major decision and two decisions to give GMLOS its first trip to state since 2005 43-30.

Pins by the Bulldogs’ Anthony Romero at 106 and Cohen Wiste at 113, plus a 4-1 decision in favor of GMLOS’ James Jacobsen at 120 gave the Bulldogs a quick 15-0 lead, but the Eagles came storming back with pins by Landon Lehnertz at 126, Gavin Gust at 132 and Taylor DeFrang at 138 to take what would turn out to be their only lead of the match at 18-15.  Donavon Felten turned momentum back to the Bulldogs with a pin at 145 over Dover/Eyota’s Treyton Thesing at 5:02 to vault GMLOS back into the lead to stay at 21-18.   The Bulldogs then broke the match open with a decision by Rece Voigt at 152, a pin by Christian Jacobsen at 160, a major decision for Daniel Smith at 170, a decision by Noah Sayles at 182 and a pin for Cameron Sneed at 195 to give GMLOS a 43-18 lead.  The Eagles scored pins at 220 and heavyweight to account for the final score.

GMLOS will compete against an opponent yet to be determined in the State Class A team quarterfinals February 27th at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul.  The Section 1A individual wrestling tournament will be held this Friday at Saturday at the Mayo Civic Center, with the individual weight class champions, the runner-up and/or true second finishers qualifying for the State Class A individual wrestling tournament, which will be held February 28th and 29th at the Xcel Energy Center.
