Austin Utilities donates to Heat Share program

Austin Utilities recently presented the Salvation Army with a check for $3,378.50. The check represents donations Austin Utilities has received from their customers over the last year for the local HeatShare program. HeatShare is a Salvation Army program that provides emergency utility assistance for people with no place left to turn. The program is funded by Salvation Army donors and customers of local utility companies. Funds are typically used to pay for natural gas, oil, propane and electricity.... Read more

33rd annual Austin High School Athletic Hall of Fame Weekend this Friday and Saturday

The 33rd Annual Austin High School Athletic Hall of Fame weekend will take place tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday.  The induction ceremony will take place at halftime of the girl’s basketball game with Albert Lea Friday night at Ove Berven gym, and Joel Schiek, a member of the Hall of Fame Committee told John Wright on “Wright Here, Right Now” on KAUS that activities will start up again early on Saturday….... Austin City Council discusses draft rental property ordinance at Tuesday work session

The Austin City Council reviewed a draft rental property ordinance with Planning and Zoning Administrator Holly Wallace at a work session following their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday evening at Austin City Hall.  Wallace stated to the council that the city’s rental licensing and inspection committee had met three times in 2017, and she noted that the committee used the City of Faribault’s recently updated ordinance as a model.  Major provisions include a license required for each dwelling unit rented, the license term, provisional licenses, occupancy standards and registration, inspections every two years, fees, disorderly conduct prohibited on the premises and a crime fee.  Wallace stated to the council that the City of Austin has approximately 1,076 rental properties and a total of 2,670 units.  She also met recently with the Austin Landlord’s Association and reviewed with them the information discussed in the committee.  Wallace stated to the council that she is looking to bring the ordinance before the council in February, and to have it go into effect in July....
