It took some extra time, but the Bruins earned their second win in a row over the Aberdeen Wings in the shootout, 5-4.

After an entire scoreless first period, scoring came in buckets in the second period for both teams. Aberdeen got the ball rolling first with two goals in a row, just 57 seconds apart. Despite the two-goal hole, Austin came roaring back moments later. Hugh Larkin scored his second goal of the season to cut the lead to 2-1, and Carson Riddle evened things up only 21 seconds later. The Wings continued to pressure when Jack Powell blasted a shot from the center point past Bruins netminder Tyler Shea to regain the lead Aberdeen, 3-2. All-in-all, there were five goals scored in two minutes and 45 seconds.

Nearing the end of the second period, Kevin Gabor muscled his way into the zone and was able to get a shot on Wings goalie Jake Sibell. The rebound laid free in the blue-paint where Ben Almquist hammered home the goal with no time remaining on the clock. After a brief discussion, the referee and linesmen deemed it a good-goal and the Bruins went to the locker room with a tie score, 3-3.

In the third, the Bruins got their first lead of the evening when Connor Tilmon worked his way into the offensive zone and powered a shot through that squeaked over the goal-line. Aberdeen worked their way back into the game late in the third when Riley Murphy netted his fourth goal of the season to equal the score at 4-4. Neither team could find the back of the net in the remaining 6:24 of the third period nor in the 3-on-3 overtime period, so the teams were forced to find a winner in a shootout.

The first five shooters of the first round were stopped by each team’s netminder, and with the game on his stick, Almquist put one five-hole on Sibell, lighting the lamp and winning the game for the Bruins 5-4.

The Bruins have won their last two games with the victory improved to 4-2-0-1 on the season while Aberdeen fell to 2-2-1-1. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night for the second game in a row at Riverside Arena and the fourth overall between the clubs.
