Austin woman sentenced on weapons possession charge in Mower County District Court

One of two individuals arrested after a search warrant was executed at a residence in the 1800 block of 3rd Avenue Southwest in Austin on May 2nd, 2019 turned up marijuana, cartridges of THC wax, one round of .380 caliber ammunition, a .22 caliber and a .380 caliber pistol, hallucinogenic mushrooms, a box of 9 mm ammunition, a small amount of cocaine, several THC cartridges and a large amount of cash has been sentenced to jail time and supervised probation in Mower County District Court.

25-year old Akalo Omot Abella of Austin was sentenced Wednesday to nine days in jail, five years of supervised probation and 40 hours of community work service for a felony charge of being a violent felon in possession of firearm ammunition.  A 60-month prison sentence was stayed for five years if Abella complies with the terms of her probation, and she was given credit for nine days already served.

Abella first pleaded guilty to the charge in September of 2019, and she was convicted in December of the same year.  A felony 5th degree drug possession charge in the case was dismissed with Abella’s guilty plea.
