Austin VFW baseball team uses big 4th inning to down Cannon Falls 15-4 in 5 innings Sunday

The Austin VFW Post #1216 baseball team was going for win number three in a row Sunday at Marcusen Park versus Cannon Falls, and a nine-run bottom half of the fourth inning blew things wide open in a 15-4, 5-inning win.

Cannon Falls took a 1-0 lead after a half-inning, but Austin answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first and four more in the second for an early 6-1 lead.  After Cannon Falls trimmed the lead to 6-4 with three runs in the top of the fourth, Post #1216 erupted for nine runs in the bottom half of the inning to crack the game wide open on their way to the 5-inning win.

Offensively for Austin, Peyton Ransom had a monster game by going 1 for 4 with five RBI’s and four runs scored, plus he stole an incredible seven of Post #1216’s 12 bases in the game, Dakota Retterath went 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, Isaac Nelsen was 2 for 3 for Post #1216 with two runs knocked in and another scored, Isaac Osgood was 1 for 3 with three RBI’s and a run scored, Landon Meyer had one of Austin’s nine hits in three trips to the plate with a RBI, Sam Oelfke was 1 for 1 with a RBI and three runs scored and Ethan Anderson went 1 for 2 with a double, two RBI’s and a run scored.

Blake Cummings earned the win on the mound for Austin by pitching 3.67 innings and giving up three runs, all earned, on two hits, striking out nine and walking six.  Isaac Osgood pitched the last 1.33 innings for Post #1216 and gave up one run, which was earned, on two hits, striking out two and walking two.

With the win, Austin is now 7-4 on the season, and Post #1216 travels to Owatonna for their next game Tuesday night, followed by a home game at Marcusen Park Thursday night versus the Rochester Panthers.
