Austin VFW baseball team falls to Winona 5-4 in 8 innings Saturday
The Austin VFW Post #1216 baseball team played host to Winona in a District 1 matchup at Marcusen Park Saturday, and although Austin rallied to tie the game at four apiece with three runs in the bottom of the 7th, it was Winona scoring in the top of the 8th to win by the score of 5-4.
Winona jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the 1st before Austin tallied a single run in the bottom the 4th to cut the deficit to 3-1. Winona scored what they thought was an insurance run in the top of the 7th to make the score 4-1, but, with two outs, Post #1216 rallied to tie the game in dramatic fashion as Isaac Nelsen, Ethan Anderson and Sam Oelfke all singled in runs in succession to tie the game at four apiece and send the contest into extra innings. Winona, though, answered back with a single run in the top of the 8th, and they made that run stand up to earn the extra-innings win.
Offensviely for Austin, both Isaac Nelson and Ethan Anderson wound up going 2 for 4 with a RBI apiece and Nelson scoring a run, Sam Oelfke went 2 for 3 for Post #1216 with a RBI and Sam Winkels picked up the other Austin hit in the game in four official trips to the plate with a run scored. Isaac Osgood drew two walks and scored a run for Austin and Cooper Napton drew a walk and also scored a run in the loss.
With the loss, Austin dips to 3-4 on the season, and Post #1216 will be back at home Tuesday night for a district matchup with Kasson, with first pitch at Marcusen Park at 5:00 p.m.
