The Austin Packers girls’ soccer team was looking to snap a three-game losing streak when they hosted Big 9 Conference rival Mankato West at Art Hass Stadium Tuesday evening, but it was the Scarlets snapping a two-game losing streak of their own with three goals in the first ten minutes of the second half to win 4-0.

Annelise Winch, a junior midfielder for Mankato West scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 33rd minute when she dribbled the ball from midfield up the left wing, cut to the top of  the penalty area, make a quick move on an Austin defender and buried a left-footed shot in the lower right corner of the goal to give the Scarlets a 1-0 lead.  West came out flying in the second half as junior midfielder Elise Ryklus tallied in the 42nd minute to give the Scarlets a 2-0 lead.  Senior forward Kylie Peters then tallied her third goal of the season three minutes later to increase Mankato East’s lead to 3-0, and Winch scored her second goal of the game and third of the season on a cross into the 18 from junior forward Alaina Spaude in the 49th minute to make the final 4-0.

Austin’s Eliana Bentley had the two best chances to score for the Packers, but her shot from 12 yards straightaway in the area in the first half was stopped by West’s senior goalkeeper Bri Stoltzman, and another good chance in the second half was turned away by the Scarlets’ other keeper, sophomore Macy Bauer.  Austin had four shots on goal in the game, while Packer goalkeeper Sara Wangen made 11 saves in facing 15 shots.

With the loss, Austin falls to 1-4 on the season, and they are scheduled to be back in action Friday night in Winona at Paul Giel Field against the Winhawks, with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m.
