The Austin Packers girls hockey team played host to the Spartans of Rochester Mayo in a Big 9 Conference matchup at Riverside Arena Saturday afternoon, and senior defenseman Layla Rippentrop tallied three goals for a hat trick plus an assist, and eight different Spartans wound up scoring in a 10-0 Mayo win.
Mayo led 3-0 at the end of one period when they broke the game wide open with a six-goal second period, including the first three in a span of 1:48. The Spartans outshot the Packers for the game 46-11, with 8th grade goaltender Lily Haedt making 36 saves in net for Austin, while junior Grace Kober turned away all 11 shots she faced to earn the shutout win for Mayo. Austin was whistled for four penalties for eight minutes, while Mayo was called for two penalties for four minutes. The Packers were 0 for 3 on the power play, while the Spartans went 1 for 3 with the man advantage.
With the loss, the Packers fall to 0-5 overall on the season, and 0-3 in the Big 9 Conference. Austin returns to action Tuesday night in Worthington for a non-conference matchup with the Trojans of Worthington/Fulda, with face-off at 7 p.m.
