Austin Packers girls hockey team falls to Red Wing 5-3 Saturday

The Austin Packers girls hockey team traveled to Red Wing Prairie Island Arena Saturday to take on the Wingers in a Big 9 Conference matchup on Hockey Day in Minnesota, and in a game the Packers led 3-2 at the end of two periods, the Wingers were able to tally three third-period goals in a 5-3 victory.

Lauren Bowe scored her fifth goal of the season only :13 seconds into the contest to give the Packers a quick 1-0 lead, with assists to Allie Davidson, her third, and to Brenna Haedt, also her third.  Red Wing scored the next two goals in the period to edge in front, 2-1, but Austin tied the game on a goal from Davidson, her second of the season at 8:15, with an assist to Jamey Bastyr, her first of the year for a 2-2 tie at the end of one.

The Packers then went out in front 3-2 on a goal from Kate Fox, her third of the season at 8:15 of the second period with an assist to Avery Anderson, her first of the sesaon, and the score remained 3-2 in favor of Austin until Red Wing’s Alison Krueger tied the game at 4:49 of the third period, and goals from Tatum Zylka, her second of the game just over a minute later at 5:57, and from Cheyenne Tyler, her second of the game at 10:18 of the period gave Red Wing the win.

The Wingers outshot the Packers 56-16 for the game, with Packer netminder Chloe Schaal turning away 51 shots in the contest, while Wingers goaltender Allie Meyer made 13 saves in picking up the win in net.  Austin was whistled for seven penalties for 14 minutes, while the Wingers were called for five penalties for 10 minutes, and Red Wing was 2 for 5 on the power play, while Austin was 0 for 3.

The Packers are now 1-18-1 overall on the season, and 0-12 in the Big 9 Conference, and Austin returns to action in Fairmont Monday night for a non-conference matchup with the Cardinals, with face-off at 7 p.m.
