Austin Packers boys tennis team falls to Winona 4-3 in Section 1AA team tournament

The Austin Packers boys’ tennis team, the No. 9 seed in the Section 1AA team tournament traveled to Winona Monday to take on the eighth-seeded Winhawks, and it was Winona eking out a 4-3 win to move on to play top-seeded Rochester Mayo today (Tuesday).

The Packers picked up wins from Joey Schammel at No. 1 singles, as Schammel blew past Owen Ping of Winona 6-1, 6-0.  Cole Hebrink was victorious at No. 2 singles as he downed Justin Brickner of the Winhawks in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 and Thomas Garry earned a win at No. 3 singles for Austin over Winona’s Caleb Ellenburg in straight sets 7-6 (5), 6-4.  The Winhawks were able to win the rest of the matches in straight sets.

With the loss, the team portion of Austin’s season unfortunately comes to an end, but the Packers will return to action at the Section 1AA individual boys’ tennis tournament Tuesday, May 24th at Farmington High School, at a time yet to be determined.
