Austin Packers boys’ tennis team falls to Rochester John Marshall 5-2 in Section 1AA tournament

The Austin Packers boys’ tennis team, the No. 10 seed in the Section 1AA boys’ tennis tournament traveled to Rochester Monday to meet the 7th seeded John Marshall Rockets in the first round of action, and it was the Rockets prevailing 5-2 to move into the 1AA quarterfinals.

Head Coach Jeff Anderson stated that Joey Schammel played a great match at No. 1 singles and defeated Marko Jokic, who had defeated Schammel last weekend at the Big 9 Tournament in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.  The other win for the Packers was at second doubles where Michael and Thomas Garry downed Danny Joey Garcia and Randy Hillesheim of JM in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

The loss wrapped up the team portion of Austin’s season, but individuals for the Packers will take part in the Section 1AA individual boys’ tennis tournament starting on June 2nd.  With the win, John Marshall moves into the quarterfinals against No. 2 seed Rochester Century today at 4:00 p.m.  Other first round results included No. 9 Winona knocking off eighth-seeded Faribault 6-1, and the Winhawks will square off with top-seeded Rochester Mayo in Rochester this afternoon 4:00 p.m.  Fifth-seeded Lakeville North downed 12th seeded Farmington 7-0, and they advance to play at No. 4 Owatonna at 4:00 p.m. this afternoon, and No. 6 Northfield was victorious 7-0 over 11th seeded Albert Lea, and the Raiders will meet No. 3 seed Lakeville South in Lakeville this afternoon at 4:00 p.m.  The Section 1AA team semi-finals will be played this Thursday, May 27th, and the 1AA boys’ tennis team final will be played at the high seed Friday, May 28th.
