Austin Packers boys’ tennis downs Farmington 4-3 in regular-season finale

The Austin Packers boys’ tennis team was on the road at Farmington Thursday to wrap up the regular season with a non-conference match with the Tigers, and it was the Packers rallying to win a pair of three-set matches at second and fourth singles for a 4-3, come-from-behind win.

The Packers were down 3-2 with both Cole Hebrink at No. 2 singles and Michael Garry at No. 4 singles down a set, but Hebink, who fell to Farmington’s Miika Benning 6-3 in the first set rallied to take the next two sets 6-0, 6-2 for the win.  Garry, who was playing his first varsity singles match when the Packers had to move him into that spot because of some missing players fell in the first set to Tommy West of the Tigers 6-1, but came back to take the second set 6-1 and the third set 6-2 for the victory.  Joey Schammel was a winner in straight sets at No. 1 singles as he blew past Erik Hall of Farmington 6-0, 6-0 and Thomas Garry at No. 3 singles for Austin downed Connor Watson of the Tigers in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.

The Packers are back in action at the Big 9 Conference meet at the Rochester Outdoor Tennis Center Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. before starting section team play Tuesday with our opponent and location to be announced.
