Austin Packers boys hockey team downed by St. Paul Johnson 4-2

The Austin Packers boys hockey team took to the road to Gustafson Phalen Arena in St. Paul Saturday for their second matchup this season with the St. Paul Johnson Governors, and while the Packers were victorious 5-3 at Riverside Arena on December 5th, the Governors jumped out to a 3-0 lead Saturday on their home ice on their way to a 4-2 victory.

The Governors held a 1-0 lead for two periods before Isaiah Henderson tallied on the power play at 3:38 of the third period, followed by teammate Joaquin Ochoki at 6:00 to give St. Paul Johnson a 3-0 lead.  The Packers tried to rally when Grady Carney scored at 7:28 of the period to cut the Governors lead to 3-1, with assists to Bradley Lagerstedt and Elijah Kruger, and Austin edged closer at 12:56 when Isaac Anderson put the puck in the back of the net on the power play, with Lagerstedt and Trent Rubin assisting to make the score 3-2.  The Packers pulled netminder Daran Plunkett late for the 6th attacker to try to tie the game, but St. Paul Johnson’s Matthew Corniea tallied into the empty net with only :12 second left to account for the 4-2 final.

The Packers outshot the Governors 37-24 for the game, with Plunkett making 20 saves in facing 23 shots, while St. Paul Johnson goaltender Tyler Mishica turned away 35 of the 37 shots he faced to earn the win in goal.  Austin was whistled for three penalties for six minutes, while St. Paul Johnson was called for six penalties for 17 minutes, and each team notched a power-play goal in the contest.

With the loss, the Packers are now 3-4 on the season, and Austin returns to action on the road Tuesday in Wasceca versus the Bluejays Tuesday evening, with the non-conference matchup facing off at 7 p.m. that evening.
