Austin Packers boys’ hockey shut out by Rochester Mayo Thursday night 4-0
The Austin Packers boys’ hockey team took to the road Thursday night for a Big 9 Conference game versus the Rochester Mayo Spartans at Graham Arena, and the Spartans tallied three first-period goals on their way to a 4-0 shutout win.
Two power play goals 10 seconds apart in the first period for Jayden Hale and Nate Williamson of Mayo at 11:42 and 11:52 put the Spartans in the lead 2-0, and an even-strength tally by Nate Wigle at 14:02 increased Mayo’s lead to 3-0 at the end of one period. Chandler Dennis scored the only goal of the second period at 2:23, and goaltender Max Cothern did the rest for the Spartans by turning away all 24 shots he faced.
Brayden Klapperick got the start in net for Austin and made 21 saves in facing 25 shots. The Packers are now 0-11 in the Big 9 Conference and 1-16 overall. Austin returns to the ice at home Monday night versus Winona, with the face-off at 7:00 p.m.
