Gage Schmidt tallied a hat trick and an assist for four points, and the Mankato West Scarlets outshot the Austin Packers 58-6 on their way to a 6-0 win at All Seasons Arena Thursday evening.

Brandon Swenson’s goal at 10:30 of the first period wound up being the eventual game-winner, and the Scarlets broke the game open in the second period with three goals, two by Schmidt at 3:10 and 8:01, and 46 seconds later, Zach Benson tallied the fourth goal of the game for West with an assist to Schmidt to increase the Scarlets lead to 4-0 at the end of two periods.

Schmidt finished off his hat trick with a power-play goal 5:30 of the third period to make the score 5-0, and Gavin Brunmeier capped the scoring with an even-strength goal at 16:52.

Austin netminder Bray Klapperick was kept extremely busy in the Packer net, as he made 52 saves in facing 58 shots on goal, while West goaltender Caleb Cross had to make only six saves to earn the shutout.

With the loss, Austin dips to 0-2 on the season, and the Packers return to action Saturday afternoon at Riverside Arena versus Red Wing, with face-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
