Austin Packers baseball falls to Stewartville 7-3 Saturday

The Austin Packers baseball team was looking to get back on the winning track versus Section 1AAA rival Stewartville in a non-conference tilt at Dick Seltz Field Saturday, but it was the Tigers jumping out to a 4-1 lead on their way to a 7-3 win.

Stewartville score two in the top of the first and two more in the second to lead 4-0 before Austin plated a run in the bottom of the second for a 4-1 Tigers lead.  The score remained 4-1 until the top of the fifth when the Tigers plated three runs for a 7-1 lead, and it was the Packers coming back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to account for the 7-3 final.

Offensively for the Packers, Kody Blom was 2 for 3 Saturday with two runs scored, Peyton Ransom went 1 for 4 with an RBI, Dakota Retterath was 1 for 3 with a pair of stolen bases, Nick Robertson picked up a hit in four trips to the plate, Isaiah Conway went 1 for 1 with a run knocked in and another scored, Isaac Osgood went 1 for 2 and Toby Holtz was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Blake Cummings got the start on the mound for Austin Saturday and was saddled with the loss, pitching the first 3 and 1/3rds of an inning and giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits, striking out five and walking four.  Sam Oelfke then pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up three runs, all earned, on two hits, striking out one and walking one, and Brayden Bishop then came on with no one out in the top of the fourth and gave up no runs on two hits, fanning five and walking none.

With the loss, the Packers are now 3-7 overall on the season, and they return to action Tuesday at Winona versus the Winhawks, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
