Austin man sentenced to prison time on domestic assault charge in Mower County District Court

An Austin man who assaulted a pregnant woman during an incident in August of 2020 has been sentenced to prison time in Mower County District Court.

33-year-old Alberto Gonzalez Garcia was sentenced Thursday to 28 months in prison on a felony charge of domestic assault by strangulation.  Garcia was charged with seven felonies in August 2020 after law enforcement reported that he assaulted his estranged wife, who was expecting at the time. Court documents state Garcia broke into her home and then punched her in the stomach, attempted to strangle her, and finally pulled out a knife and threatened her.

Garcia pleaded guilty to the felony domestic assault by strangulation charge in February, and he was given credit for 214 days already served.  Three felony counts of first-degree burglary as well as second-degree assault, terroristic threats, and domestic assault were dismissed with Garcia’s guilty plea in the case.
