Austin man in custody after early Saturday morning shooting in downtown Austin

A suspect is in custody after an early Saturday morning shooting in downtown Austin.

Officers from the Austin Police Department responded to a reported assault in the Plaza Parking Lot in downtown Austin at approximately 12:37 a.m. Saturday morning. Officers located a male victim there who appeared to have been shot in the shoulder and leg. The victim was treated by the officers, along with the Austin Fire Department, before being turned over to Mayo Clinic Ambulance.  Chief of Police Dave McKichan stated in a report that a second victim, who had suffered a non-life-threatening leg wound, would later be located seeking treatment at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Austin.

Officers did identify a suspect, who was located in a residence in the 200 block of 7th St. NW at 3:35 a.m. Saturday morning. Chief McKichan stated that 29-year old Hector Ubaldo Serrano Maldonado, of Austin, was taken into custody without incident. Detectives later recovered a firearm believed to have been used during the incident, and Maldonado is being held in the Mower County jail on a felony charge of 1st degree assault, great bodily harm. 

McKichan stated that the case remains under investigation.
