The Austin Packers boys’ soccer team received a good test as to how far they’ve come as a team this season Saturday as they traveled to the Holy Angels Stardome in Richfield to tangle with the number-1 Class A ranked Stars of Holy Angels Academy.  In a tightly contested and hard-fought contest, Carter Hermanson tallied the only goal of the match in the 58th minute to lift the Stars past the Packers 1-0.

The Big 9 Conference champion Packers end the regular season with a record of 11-2-2, and the loss was the first for the Packers since a 2-1 loss to St. Paul Como Park in the season opener back on August 24th.  Section tournament seedings were determined over the weekend, and congratulations to Austin, who earned the number-1 seed for the Section 1A boys’ soccer tournament, as the Packers will be in action at home Saturday against one of three teams, number-8 seed St. Charles, number-9 Schaeffer Academy or number-16 seed Kasson/Mantorville.  The Lions will host the Komets in a match Tuesday, withe winner going on to play the Saints on Thursday.  In other Section 1A boys’ soccer matchups, number-12 seed Red Wing will host number-13 seed Plainview/Elgin/Millville Tuesday afternoon in Red Wing at 5 p.m., with the winner playing number-5 seed Dover/Eyota Thursday evening at 7 p.m.  10th seeded Cannon Falls will meet #15 seed Caledonia Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m., with the winner moving on to play number-7 seeded Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa Thursday evening at 7 p.m.  In the other first round matchup, number-11 seed Lake City will entertain 14th seeded Stewartville at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening.  The winner moves on to play sixth-seeded Winona Thursday evening at 7 p.m.

Besides Austin, number-2 seed LaCrescent/Hokah, number-3 seed Rochester Lourdes and fourth-seeded Byron received byes into the quarterfinals.  After the quarterfinal round Saturday, the high seeds will host the semi-finals on Tuesday, October 15th.  The winners will then advance to the Section 1A boys’ soccer final at Paul Giel Field in Winona on Thursday, October 17th at 5 p.m.

The Austin Packers girls’ soccer team received the 8 seed in the Section 1A girls soccer tournament, and will host either number 9 seed St. Charles or 16th seeded Schaeffer Academy Thursday at Art Hass Stadium at 7 p.m.  Those two teams will play Tuesday at 7 p.m. in St. Charles.  In other first round matchups, number 12 Red Wing will host 13th seeded Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa Tuesday in Red Wing at 5 p.m, with the winner moving on to play fifth-seeded Stewartville Thursday night at 7 p.m.  Number 10 seed Plainview/Elgin/Millville will entertain 15th seeded Lake City Tuesday at 5 p.m., with the winner advancing to play seven seed Kasson/Mantorville at 7 p.m. Thursday night.  The other 1st round matchup will be #11 seed Winona hosting #14 Caledonia, with the winner facing number 6 seed LaCrescent-Hokah Thursday at 7 p.m.

If Austin wins their first round matchup, they would advance into the quarterfinals to play top-seeded Winona Cotter at Cotter Saturday afternoon at noon.  Other teams that received a bye into the quarterfinals included number 2 seed Rochester Lourdes, number 3 seed Dover-Eyota and four seed Byron.  Quarterfinal winners will play at the high seed in the semi-finals on Tuesday, October 15th and the Section 1A girls’ soccer final will be played at Paul Gield Field in Winona Thursday evening October 17th at 7:30 p.m.
