Austin ArtWorks Festival to honor graduating class of 2020 with two activities to boost community spirit amidst COVID-19 pandemic

Austin ArtWorks Festival is focusing on using the arts to boost community spirit in a year when a large community gathering is not possible. From May 19 to May 29, 2020, the Austin ArtWorks (Graduation) Festival will honor the class of 2020 with two activities: Chalk the Walk and Lighting Up the Marquee.

The public is invited to come downtown and create a sidewalk chalk message for seniors on 4th Ave or Main Street. The Austin ArtWorks (Graduation) Festival has commissioned a local artist to create some inspiring panels. Seniors are invited to stroll (with appropriate social distance) and read the messages any time.

High school seniors are invited to make an appointment to have their name put on the Paramount marquee for a one-of-a-kind photo opportunity. 2020 graduates will be the only class to get this opportunity since the Paramount is dark during the COVID 19 health crisis, freeing up the marquee for messages.

Appointments are free but must be reserved online at austinareaarts.org. To date, over 60 area graduates have registered for appointments from Austin High School, Pacelli Catholic Schools, Southland High School, Lyle High School, Blooming Prairie High School and the University of Minnesota.

The Austin ArtWorks Festival committee will announce more arts activities for the summer months as well.
